Taking its name from the Renaissance traveller and naturalist Pierre Belon du Mans (1517–1564), whose accounts remain a major source for the cultural history of the eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans, the association is rooted in an open, comparative, and interdisciplinary approach, attentive to the circulations between Mediterranean, Balkan, and European societies.
