Stamatis Zochios is a research fellow at the Research Centre for Greek Folklore of the Academy of Athens. He is also editor-in-chief of the journal Études Balkaniques – Cahiers Pierre Belon, publications coordinator for the Pierre Belon Association, and an associate member of Eur'ORBEM (CNRS-Sorbonne University) as well as the Groupe Sociétés, Religions, Laïcités (GSRL, CNRS-EPHE-PSL).

His research focuses on lived religion, Orthodox Christianity, Slavic paganism and mythology, demonology, magic, exorcism practices, and phenomena of possession, as well as on the history of religious beliefs and practices in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. His work lies at the crossroads of history, philology, anthropology, and religious studies, with particular attention to the long term, cultural circulations, and interactions between religious traditions and popular cultures.

Author of numerous publications on lived Orthodoxy, Greek and Slavic religious traditions, and the reception of pre-Christian legacies in Eastern Europe, he currently directs several international research projects and regularly collaborates with European academic institutions.
